Handicrafts as an economic activity goes back to old Sudanese civilizations answering the needs of Man. During the last century new functions were added to handicrafts such as the promotion of human relations. Civilizations, communications, and dialogue beside economic benefits leading to the development of villages and rural areas.

Towards a rainbow heritage:

The contemporary transformation which is witness by the century of global information flow incorporates the elements of acculturation and heritage encompassment. However nations with deeply rooted heritage values and confidence on its heritage resources would be keen to preserve its heritage potentials and reproduce it as a contribution in the main stream of human creativity. The popular artist will remain active using his mental creativity which is the strongest gift bestowed him by Allah. Popular arts are the treasure expressing the collective sentiment of the nation reflecting its purity, honesty, wisdom and bravery. They play a crucial role in understanding the thinking of the different ethnic groups and their deep rooted popular aesthetic values. In individual artist is often more reflexive of the values of his group.
